Analyzing ancient chronicles, annals, and personal diaries of eyewitnesses, researchers repeatedly encounter accounts of extraordinary natural and celestial phenomena that preceded bloody battles. From ancient times, people believed that harbingers of war do not arise by chance, but serve as cosmic warnings for humanity.
Astronomical anomalies, sudden mass deaths of birds, unusual flashes in the sky, or the spontaneous falling of battle standards were interpreted by sages as ominous signs of destiny. While rationalists view such occurrences as mere coincidence, historians note a striking chronological precision with which mystical omens came to pass over the last seven centuries.
Omens of the Hundred Years War and the fatal banner of Charles XII
One of the earliest documented cases of celestial forewarning occurred in 1337 in the French province of Anjou. During a sudden summer tempest, a powerful ball lightning struck the cross atop the dome of Saint Francis Cathedral, shattering it into fragments. Father Berandot, the cathedral prior, publicly announced that immense calamity was descending upon France, and within a few months, the exhausting Hundred Years War erupted.
A remarkably similar event unfolded on the eve of the decisive Battle of Poltava in June 1709. Near the royal pavilion of the Swedish monarch Charles XII, without the slightest gust of wind, the main royal standard suddenly fell to the ground. Experienced General Wolmar Anton von Schlippenbach strongly urged the king to postpone the general engagement and withdraw, recognizing an ill omen. However, the self-assured monarch dismissed his advisor’s warning.
The outcome of the battle on June 27, 1709, is well known: the Swedish army was completely routed, Charles XII was severely wounded, and Schlippenbach was captured. As shown by ancient prophecies about fateful events, ignoring the signs of fate has repeatedly led to the downfall of mighty rulers.
The parade of comets in 1941 and the mass mortality of birds
The early months of 1941 proved particularly rich in ominous celestial signs, when the world stood upon the threshold of the twentieth century’s most destructive conflict. Within a span of months, astronomers registered the appearance of three bright comets visible to the naked eye across the northern hemisphere.
In January 1941, astronomers at Pulkovo Observatory tracked Comet Cunningham streaking across the constellation Aquila. In February, the enormous silvery tail of Comet Friend unfurled across the eastern horizon. Finally, in June 1941, Dutch and Soviet astronomers discovered Comet Van Gent. The appearance of three successive celestial wanderers had long been regarded as a harbinger of plague and war, referenced in ancient prophecies of the end times and trials of nations.
During the spring of that same year, inhabitants of the Leningrad region witnessed a disturbing phenomenon: fields and forest edges were blanketed with thousands of dead swifts and swallows. Scientists attributed the mortality to sudden frost and insect scarcity, yet local elders unanimously maintained that the earth was preparing for great bloodshed.
The curse of Tamerlane’s tomb in Samarkand
The most dramatic and fiercely debated mystical episode at the outbreak of the Second World War on the Eastern Front was the opening of the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum in Samarkand, where the great conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) rested. In June 1941, a Soviet archaeological expedition led by Mikhail Gerasimov commenced excavations to reconstruct the commander’s appearance.
Local elders warned the scientists of an ancient inscription carved upon the nephrite sarcophagus, stating that whoever disturbs Timur’s peace will unleash a demon of war far fiercer than any previous invasion. Disregarding the warning, the heavy slab was lifted between June 19 and 21, exhuming the emir’s remains. Exactly one day later, at dawn on June 22, 1941, Axis armies invaded Soviet borders, initiating a catastrophic war.
Only in November 1942, after Tamerlane’s remains were respectfully returned to Samarkand and reinterred according to Islamic rites, did the pivotal turning point occur at the Battle of Stalingrad.
